Questions to ask yourself regarding insurance

1. What Does My Policy Cover?
Ask for a clear explanation of what is covered (and how much $) under your policy, including:
  • Structural repairs
  • Personal property
  • Depreciation
  • Additional living expenses (ALE) if you need to stay elsewhere
Clarify any exclusions or limitations that may apply to fire damage.
2. What is the Claims Process Timeline?
Understand the key steps and timeframes, including:
  • When the adjuster will inspect the damage
  • How long it will take to receive payment
  • Deadlines for submitting estimates or proofs of loss
3. How Should I Document My Losses?
Get guidance on the best way to document damages and losses, such as:
  • Taking photographs or videos
  • Creating an inventory of damaged items
  • Retaining receipts for repairs or temporary accommodations
4. Can I Get an Advance Payment?
If you need immediate funds for temporary housing or other urgent needs, ask:
  • If your policy allows advance payments
  • How to request and use these funds without affecting the overall settlement
5. Do You Recommend Specific Contractors or Services?
While adjusters may suggest vendors, ask:
  • If you’re required to use recommended contractors
  • If using your own contractor affects the claim
  • Whether the insurer approves pre-repair estimates from your chosen contractor

Mayor Bass Issues Executive Order to Help Property Owners with Post-Fire Rebuilds

In response to recent fires, Mayor Bass has issued an executive order to expedite the rebuilding process for property owners whose structures were damaged or destroyed. The order facilitates "like for like" reconstruction, allowing property owners to rebuild structures up to 110% of their previous size without undergoing the standard permitting process.

To streamline this effort, the city will establish a centralized permit center, operational seven days a week, staffed by various city departments and representatives from federal and state agencies. Key measures include expedited reviews requiring departments to complete initial assessments within 30 days, concurrent departmental reviews, and prompt inspections and utility clearances.

The executive order also waives certain requirements to accelerate rebuilding. Notably, eligible projects are exempt from the city's all-electric building mandate, demolition permits (with prior notification to the Department of Building and Safety), and specific discretionary reviews such as Coastal Development Permits and specific plan compliance. Additionally, property owners are permitted to place a recreational vehicle or temporary residence on-site during construction and have up to seven years to obtain permits and three years to complete construction once permits are issued. The Department of Public Works is tasked with developing a comprehensive debris cleanup plan to address hazardous materials and watershed concerns.
